theres even ways to get the music for free, but im not gonna tell you how. and yes, its all legal.

as long as you are a subscriber to napster, and your 9.95 is paid, its all your for the taking, legally.

but im still not gonna tell you how to get rid of the license

you can download from napster all you want, but you can copy any of it, burn any of it , or move any of it to a portable device without paying extra....

unless you can get rid of the license napster puts on each of its files.

but im still not gonna tell you how to get rid of the license

i have 3.37gigs of music i legally downloaded from napster. thats over 70 hours of music

Thanks, I quit downloading when they started making a stink over it. I was using Napster then and I didn't know if it was all legit these days.

I'm after a lot but there's a debut CD from a new artist Grayson Capps I'm wanting to burn.

I don't do as much downloading as I used to. When I did I used winmx... wait... I just checked it and it still works. I have no idea if that is 'legal' though.

napster is legal , now.

all the peer to peer sharing networks are not. well, the networks are, but swapping music, movies, software, whatever... that is not.

for 9.99 a month, i can LEGALLY download all i want. they are saved as WMA files and all of the info is saved into the file details, such as artist, track number, date, song name, album name, etc etc etc

I use Real Rhapsody and like it. I have never messed with anything else. They have an issue like Napsters that myoutboards is dancing around, but why is working around licenses mo betta than stealing from the local liquor store?

I know, I know, but really, why is it any different?

Singingfish search engine is good for finding free audio-but the majority of it is unsigned or small bands that don't seem to mind the extra presence it gives them. That and a lot of older stuff.

I've found some really cool stuff on there. Hendrix playing with The Beatles and so on.

Napster and Rhapsody sound compelling, but it's my understanding that you have to pay the recurring monthly in order to keep using the music legally. You can pay the monthly fee and get a massive amount of music in a short amount of time, but then you are stuck paying the fee to listen. I haven't read the licensing agreement, but my assumption is that you couldn't legally keep the music you burned to a CD once you stopped paying the monthly fee.

On the other hand, you can pay iTunes (or Real, or any of the other sites) $1 per song, but you get to keep it forever.

At that point, it comes down to a personal preference of owning or renting. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Tim's Floater,

Actually you have to pay Rhapsody the fee AND you have to pay for any songs that you actually burn. You can keep an umlimited library on your PC solely for the fee. Once you burn them, they are yours forever.

myoutboards,

I understand it is legal, but aren't you still denying licensing money from the guy who wrote/performed the song? Knowing your screwing somebody, but doing it legally is not a lot different in my book . . . Not trying to get real heavy, but I have been on a kick to get my kids to think this way. Fact is that somebody is not getting paid for the work they do. Just doesn't seem right to me. :)

Limewire is what the kids are using although I buy them Rhapsody. I am not forbidding them to download, but I want to make sure they are honest with themselves when they do it.

It seems to me myoutboards is paying for the music, he's just burning it or whatever for his own "fair use".
He's not reselling it or making a profit from it from what he said.
Why shouldn't somebody be able to compile music to listen to while they are fishing(probably why I don't catch a lot), driving around or just playing DJ with favorite songs.
Fair use of music has always been allowed, since recording has been around.
I think a Supreme Court case about it is scheduled in the future.

You can't download it without somebody wanting money, but it comes over the airwaves totally free to be recorded with whatever media you prefer.....what am I missing?

What you're missing is:

1. Those tunes didn't come from outer space. Someone CREATED/RECORDED them. They OWN them.

Do you get paid for what you do? If you have a bright idea, is it OK for me to STEAL IT?

If so, forget any of this message.

2. Copywrite laws were created for just this reason. The internet is not yet "regulated"-hold on.

3. If you want "free" go ahead and copy radio. The quality won't be there and you'll get what you pay for-NOTHING.

Note: Radio pays to play those tunes in the event they hope you'll listen. It's called ADVERTISING.

Re: Legal music downloads?

I just looked deeper into this. The tunebite thing saves the songs that you pay to LISTEN to on your PC in a burnable format that bypasses the .75 - .99 a song that those services charge for songs that you intend to burn for future use. Although, this is probably legal, I still beleive that the honest review of this says that you have now legally stolen from two people 1) the Music Service and 2) the artist. Their intentions are to charge for the products they supply. It is the basis for all commerce and the basis for all intelectual property that the creator and owner have a right to receive compensation for the use of their product. If you are comforted by it being legal, then OK. The fact is that all of this will be clamped down on for the same reason that you should not be able to buy a book and run it through the copier at work and then sell those copies at the swap meet. Same thing in my book. I know that a lot of us have become comfortable with sharing software etc. A lot of businesses were sued for ileggally copying software. I ask again, how is this different? My guess is only in loopholes that will eventually be closed, not honest permission given by the owner of the property.

Think a little more about it before you react. Imagine your kid writing the most beautiful song ever written after you paid for years of music lessons and purchased many instruments and watched as he/she struggled financially and then bang, super-hit. But in this new world he/she wins a Grammy, but can't feed the kids . . . Hmmmmm.
