Leg won't go up

Okay here is the scoop. I have a 26' with a 350 for power, and a OMC 225hp leg. I do not have a manual for it as I sold it yesterday and don't need one now. The fellow has to come and pick it up.
Anyways, the leg won't go up now. When I flick the switch, it only goes, "click".
So I thought those two units on top the motor were solenoids or relays. So I figured it was just like a car, just touch the two connections together and the leg would go up(cause I figured one of them was for the leg to go up and the other for the leg to go down). Well, needless to say I encountered some little puffs of smoke when I connected the screwdriver to the nuts on top the solenoids/relays, and then one huge cloud of smoke, and the battery also started to smoke. So that is where I stopped. I did not feel like catching the boat in fire, or myself.
So here I am...I sold my boat and now I can't get the leg up. I would appreciate any help at all.

Re: Leg won't go up

You likely have either a problem with the trim relays or the trim motor. Put power directly to the trim motor with jumper leads. If it goes then the relays are bad if it doesn't then the relays are bad.

Re: Leg won't go up

Thanks MrMerc. I do appreciate the info. I just want to make sure the guy is getting a good deal, and I can tell him what is wrong with it, just so he knows.
I will try that tomorrow...thanks.
But in the meantime, I got a little worried so I decided to take the gears apart and then lift the leg, then put the gears back together. So now the leg it up. But I will try the power to the trim motor itself and see what happens.
