Left turn signal on trailer not working

Hello everyone,

I'm pretty new to boating and I just bought a used boat and trailer. I had to wire my Ford Explorer with a flat 4-wire Hoppy connector. Also I had to rewire the trailer because the lights weren't working properly. Well after doing all that I still have a problem..... My running lights work fine on both sides of the trailer, however my left turn signal isn't working on the trailer. The right side is working fine. One thing I am wondering is on the 4 wire flat connector coming out of the truck the metal pin is bent and I dont know if this would have anything to do with it because I think that is the ground. But anyway please let me know if there is something that would cause this and what I can do about it.

I know that it is wired up correctly and the connections are secure

I would use a meter and be sure power is comeing from the truck and then check it back at the light to see if its getting there

Like tommays said you need to check power to the fixture. Have you tried switching bulbs from side to side or if you have a spare put it in to test? If the truck is wired correctly and the trailer is too, then it has to be an open in the wire, bulb holder, or the bulb itself. You will find that bulbs will tend to die sooner on a boat trailer than most other things. It is a good idea to unplug the wire harness from your truck when you back in to the water launching and recovering so the hot bulb doesn't contact the cold water.

The bulb itself works because it turns on when I turn on the lights for the truck. It is just when I turn on the left turn signal that nothing happens

Check the ground at the light.

The turn signal/brake light is a different bulb inside the same fixture. Or some have a separate filament inside the same bulb. Works the same. Taillights will continue to work even if turn signal won't. You also have a fuse for the turn/brake lights (separate fuse for each side) - it's #7 on my Explorer (don't ask me how I know).

Have a multimeter set it to "continuity" put one probe in the ground(white) socket and one in the yellow of your truck. Or else a 12V test light same thing.

Re: Left turn signal on trailer not working

Thanks for all the help everyone I think I am getting closer to solving this. But one more clue is when I turn on the left blinker the blinker on the truck comes on, however neither the side amber light or the left turn signal on the trailer light comes on so I am thinking that it could be the four wire flat connector from the truck since the pin is bent on it

i dont know about ford BUT on GM there are different fuses for the trailer lights

That is why i said to sure your getting power as my truck will blink and the trailer will not if the trailer fuse is blown :)

Re: Left turn signal on trailer not working

at the risk of being uncouth, I'm going to repeat myself:

You also have a fuse for the turn/brake lights (separate fuse for each side) - it's #7 on my Explorer (don't ask me how I know).

So go ahead and replace the wiring harness. If that doesn't fix it, then you can check the fuse box.

btw, the amber side marker should illuminate with the tail lights (running lights) not the turn signal.
