LED tail light full of water

The LED tail light (drivers side) has an inch or so of water in it. Put them on this spring and only dunked them in the water 5 times so far this year. Bought them at Walmart. Now I have to go find a reciept if I even have one and get a new pair. Stopped at Walmart today and they are sold out. Just my dumb luck that I end up with a defective light. I guess I could try to find the leak, drain the water, seal it up and be done, but I just don't feel like screwing around with something new to make it work right.

Crap.

I would heat up a paper clip and melt a tiny hole it in to drain it then reseal the hole and hopefully the entire light.

Bob

I did the same thing Bob suggested on my fog lights on my truck. I drilled a small hole and let it drain out. Then, I sealed the holed with epoxy and put sealent around the edges of the cover where I suspected water might be getting in.

The thing is I shouldn't have to go through the process of fixing the light. I should be able to just exchange it for another. But Walmart carries these as seasonal items and thay may not be restocked this year. So I'm stuck with a leaky light until I can find a Walmart that has them in stock so I can buy a new pair, swap them for the defective set and return them. What a PITA.

I put LED lights on my trailer a couple of weeks ago. Came back from the ramp and found some water in them. I just drilled a couple of 1/8" holes to let the water drain. Heck with it. I'm not going to lose one minute's sleep.

I had the same problem with a set I purchased from Gander Mountain. I contacted the MFG directly and they sent me a new set.

One of mine filled half way too.
I left it there. They are sealed inside and still work one year later.

These lites are all advertised as waterproof. Sorry to say but most of components on trailers are crappy. My lites are crap, and the same thing goes for the brakes which became totally nonfunctional after less than 20 launches. Galvanized? Same crap. Salt water - this is the manufacturer's no. 1 loophole. It does not matter where they are manufactured. Same crap technology and manufacturing processes, both from the USA.

Re: LED tail light full of water

If I remember right, the LED's are supposed to be sealed in epoxy, right? So water should not cause any corrosion? I launch in salt and am worried that they will corrode.

I'll take the advice and drain them until I can get another set.

I'm surprised at how many forum members have leaking LED's! I thought these things were the end all to end all trailer light problems!

Can anyone post a contact number or link for the Road Warrior brand of LED lights? I can't find one on the net and don't have the packaging anymore.

Thanks,

Mark.

Re: LED tail light full of water

I found the paperwork that came with the lights and called the the company. They said the lights should not fill with water and are sending a replacement set. Should have them in a week or so.

FYI: They did say that condensation is acceptable and the actual circuit board is encased in epoxy so they will continue to function even if full of water.

I'm happy.

Update: The replacements came. Same company brand name, same packaging, different light. The leaking ones are square with a flat lense, the new ones are square with a raised round lense. Hopefully a better non-leaking design.

I smashed one on the concrete retaining wall in my old house so I got a really good look inside it once I picked up the parts off the ground. Even if you did have water inside the lens, the circuit board and LED's are totally encapsulated in solid epoxy so it still would probably have never failed. It even worked after I smushed.

Glad you got a new set though.

Re: LED tail light full of water

Yeah--- Road Warrier was the same brand light I had to have replaced last year. They are still in the box (no time yet) so I haven't confirmed if the lense is different. Soon ....... also, I purchased a West Marine 3 light over 80" wide LED strip and in less than 8 months I am down to one working LED. Somehow ---- I had thought LED lights would be less maintenance, not more.
