On Saturday after towing 200miles I arrived at my destination, turning into the drive, I took the corner to tight 5 - 8 mph and hit the kerb and a small wall. It kicked the trailer up to about 45 degrees and the boat snapped its rear straps and left the trailer landing on the road.

Attached are a few photos. In future I will be using much larger straps, as well as taking a bit more care!.

Photo showing boat on road and fork lift used to pop it back on the trailer.

Front bow point bent right over. The straps held here but the metal bent over.
That's scary to see, because it almost happened to me yesterday! I ran over a curb and the bow stop snapped and the front of the boat slid over about six inches, off the keel roller. Luckily my old Hewes only took a scrape on the keel from the roller bracket. My lesson is that I need to replace the bow safety chain with a ratcheting strap (my winch is above the bow eye but there is a hole at the base of the winch post for an S hook) but I am going to upgrade my transom straps after seeing your picture!

E

My dad did something similar when I was growing up. He rearended a dump truck on the way home from fishing one night, and the boat crumpled the winch tower and hit the tailgate. I was too young to understand or know the extend of the damage but I still remember seeing fiberglass repairs near the bow, a winch post that didnt match the trailer, and dents in the rub rail and tailgate.

Thanks for sharing! I have been using a small bow strap and will be upgrading now. A few bucks spent on better gear is better than 2 hours in the middle of the road. I feel for ya!
