Took our pontoon out for her first voyage of the year on Saturday... Everything worked pretty well, except the engine didn't seem like it was getting the full rpms it did last year -- wasn't sure if it was a carb issue, or perhaps a prop issue... Just wasn't sure.

To help out the engine, I suggested one move forward, as the front end was stickin' up pretty good. Wow. I looked over the shore, just for a second, and looked back... and EVERYONE from the back moved to the front... and before I could say anything, water came over the deck. We weren't going very fast, and as soon as I pulled the throttle back, most everyone adjusted anyway... It probably wasn't more than 10 gallons of water... but it seemed more like 12,000 gallons.

My oreos, we could eat through a straw.

But the worst part... the absolute worst part: I bought a grill last year, clearanced out for $9. I loved that thing. I stored it in a rubbermaid tote on the front fishing platform... and just that fast, my tote, my grill, my oreos... all in the drink.

I think I would've been fine, but our pontoon has a turning radius just shy of a wal-mart parking lot. I drove around the sucker twice, before putting it in reverse, and correcting course. and just before we got to it... maybe 12 feet or so, the thing, rolled upside down, and slowly succumbed to Davy Jones' Locker.

Fortunately, we ate prior. And, once we came back, my kids, 17, 15 and 8, went to the store to get some groceries... When they came back, they asked for help carrying them in... and I went to my daughter's trunk.. and there's a brand-spankin'-new Weber. She said, "Happy Birthday in 15 days, Daddy... and if this one goes in, I think you should jump in after it." Apparently, it was more than $9.

We laughed pretty good... and all 9 of us learned a valuable lesson in 'moving in moderation'.

My first boat was a small pontoon. I "submarined" it several times. It's a weird feeling isn't it? LOL. Scared me to death the first time I did it. I was standing at the helm helm with water running across my ankles. I was preparing to abandon ship when she popped back up out of the drink. You cound not have driven a needle up my butt with a 12lb sledge hammer. LOL.

Nice of the kids to get you a new grill.

At least you didn't stuff the stern underwater trying to winch up a giant log from the muddy bottom of the Suwanee River like on Axe Men. I once saw a 24 foot barge nearly capsize when I was a kid. It was a church outing and there were a bunch of international students from the middle east aboard when a wasp suddenly appeared and they all ran to the other side of the barge en masse to escape it.

I've learned many lessons from the suwanee river boys. Something about a pontoon boat and a heavy duty winch does'nt quiet add up.

Happened to me once - someone was being a guest driver and I looked away just as he decided to slow way down as we were cresting a good-sized wake. My then 4 year old grandson was standing at the forward gate as water came pouring under the gate and washed him about 10 feet back towards me.

His response when he got up? "That was fun! Let's do it again!"

Been there; done that. I thought I was the only one who had ever done that. At least I didn't lose anything. In my case, the passengers were mostly forward in the first place. They didn't move on me.

If I eat a wave, it doesn't have anywhere to quickly drain off, weighing down the bow, making it that much more susceptible to eating another wave. I've had a second wave roll across the deck, hit the sliding glass door of the cabin, and go vertical all the way to the top of the door frame.

Sometimes it cleans the whole deck, although, the only thing I've lost is my grill scraper, and a small potted plant...

Wow. That's a lot of water. :) Looks like it even washed your outboard up on your deck!!!! :D But you still have your grill!!!!

Done this twice once on my pontoon and once on my parents jet ski.

Pontoon. About two weeks after I install the new stereo I went under a wave. The water went all the way up to the Bimini cover and was rain down from it. Worse part was it filled both helm cup holders. The cup holders drained right on the back side of the new stereo. :( zap the stereo hasn't worked since.

Jet ski: the whole jet ski and i went under a wave took about 10 mins to quit coughing up lake water. Lost a nice pair of sun glasses.

I usually do that intentionally with a jetski!! Its easy on standups, you can do it on a sitdown with a little practice. The air intake systems on them are designed to not have any issues, you could run underwater for quite a while (30 seconds?) without risking starving out the engine.
