I replaced the thermostats on 1980 175 because they were old and leaking. The new gaskets did not solve the leaking. What can be put on the covers to stop the leaking?

Hey Colorado LB !

Well how is you surfaces on the thermo covers? Pitted? If so try Permatex Ultra Black #22072 5 Oz tube or Water pump & Thermostat housing #22071.

Let it sit up and cure good. The mechanics that "rigged" my nephews engine up, They took the thermos out completely and put a washer in place to create backflow/pressure so the water would not flow too quickly threw the engine I guess. Long story short there were no rubber gaskets at all and they sealed it with the Ultra Black Permatex, not a drop of leakage.

There is a lip on one side of the thermo stats rubber gaskets, make sure when you install the rubber gasket on the thermos you put the gasket on with that lip going into the engine.

Thanks DamianJP!
When you say "let it sit up and cure" do you mean to let the adhesive flash before joining the parts or to join the parts and allow sufficient time to cure before running the motor?

Sorry for the delay in response.

Yup assemble the parts and let it sit for a sufficient time to cure before running the motor.
