I have a 1991 150 yamaha that slowly leaks off after about a day or two in the full up position. I replaced the caps and seals on the two rams. Any advice on getting the tilt piston upper pin free its a rusted mess? Also now I see a leak coming from the left ram oring/trim dust seal. This leak is only when I am trimming the motor down. Is there anything else that I should have replaced? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Likely you should have replaced the entire trim assembly. Wear on the internal valving has been the most common cause of this type of failure combined with corrosion. Even a very expensive complete rebuild kit installation will not often cure this for long. I have found no patch for this that has any longevity.

I am with Ray.
sometimes its just done.
other times its caused by repairs by untrained techs.
if the caps and rams were new odds are either the ram is scratched or the cyl is scratched.
at 1000+ PSI it does not take much.

Thanks guys,

I will take a closer look at the rams themselves and see if there are any scratches on them. There is 1000 psi in both directions? I thought the weight of the motors brought the engines down.

"When you say sometimes its just done". What can I expect if I leave it alone.

I took apart the trim ram and removed the o-ring to find out that there was a nice size metal chip inside the o-ring groove. Re assembled and everything is working.

Thanks for your input Guys.

I would still be in the market for another one. They are always a lot cheaper when you don't have to have it. That metal chip came from something inside the unit.

Ray,

At 15 years old I am probably on borrowed time with these twin. They have been great motors out and back for the 9 years that I have had them.(knock on wood) And in 1 more year there offically mine!
The metal chip was a big curl wedged inside the o-ring groove. I just purchased the new cap and I think it was never cleaned out from the manufacturing process. I didnt look inside the groove while installing the o-ring.

Boats going in this Saturday.

Thanks, learned alot from you and rodbolts post.

Your opinion what is the best outboards built in year 2000-2001 range. Thinking about moving up.
