Purchased 73 18hp Evinrude fastwin ran great on stand in water. Frd, rvs, ntrl, wtr pump, all good. Let the motor sit for a few days and noticed black residue leaking out of little holes in lower unit (1/16"). Dropped gear oil and no water mixed in??? What could this be? Guessing exhuast, holes??? Any feed back would be appreciated! Thanks Sam

Remember that oil that you put in the gas? Well every drop of it goes through the engine to lubricate it as it runs. Some gets burned, the rest goes out the exhaust. As it drains down out of the exhaust housing, it picks up carbon particles. That turns it black. Totally normal. Put it back together, put it on a boat and enjoy it.

as mentioned....its gunna do that..especially barrel running it. if the drips are causing you grief, catch them in a container and dispose of them properly. run the motor on the water and the drips will be minimal..it is what it is.jmo

Thank you for responding so quickly. My pics might give a different perspective though. There are 5 holes in lower unit, most custum. Thank you for your responses, your forum is by far the greatest!!!

As stated this is " normal " for your motor.---Using the latest and greatest oil might help and alleviate that.----Making sure that the thermostat is installed and working properly may also help !

We have no way of knowing whether or not the motor is running correctly. First thing we do know is that you are running it in a barrel. It was designed to run on a boat, on the lake. What we do not know is if it is running on both cylinders, running too rich, missing, or whatever. If a cylinder is misfiring or not firing, the fuel that would normally be burned goes out the exhaust, contributing to the mess you see. Furthermore, the unburned fuel in the barrel keeps going around and around through the cooling system and out the exhaust. It just keeps adding up and getting worse and worse.

What you are seeing absolutely is exhaust mess. But we can't say what is "normal" because we don't know how well it is running.

Get that thing out of the barrel and on a boat on the lake and give it a good hard run to burn the crud out of the exhaust housing. By then you will also know if it is performing correctly. If it is, you will see a great improvement in the discharges. But there always will be some, as I attempted to explain up above. If it bothers you, you might consider running some 100% Synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil. It will still be discharged, but at least it is bio-degradable.
