OK, I am rebuilding the carbs on my '75 50 hp Johnson. Carbs are off, and I am inspecting what I can see of the leaf plates. They all seem "straight" and not warped. One or two look as if there may be a "hair" size gap off the plate.(and I do mean just a hair) Is this within normal tolerance? I would rather not spend the time and money replacing the whole assembly if that small of a gap is OK.

Inspecting the reeds through the carb port is at best cursory. If you havn't had any blow back through the carb throats, then I wouldn't worry about them. Just make sure you do a good job on the carbs. Blow out the passages with carb/choke cleaner and then with compressed air.

Re: leaf plates

When you say "blow back", do you mean visually seeing vapor blow back?
Or, do you mean the accumulation of oil inside of the baffle box?

He means actually seeing the fuel/air mixture blowing back out the carburetor.

c/6
Hooty

Re: leaf plates

So, what does it mean when the inside of your baffle box (air box) is covered with oil?

Re: leaf plates

Hey dawg, I also noticed as I was pulling the carbs that the inside of the air silencer had some oil on it. Not a lot, but some. Not sure if this is normal. Advice, anyone?

Having some fuel/oil coating the carb covers is normal. To really see if the carbs are blowing back, take the cover off and start the engine and let it idle. Blow back will be readily apparent and if bad enough, the engine will idle rough.
