LEADED VS. UNLEADED

I RECENTLY PURCHASED AND RESOTRED A 1967 60HP EVINRUDE OUTBOARD. sHOULD I BE USING A LEAD ADDITIVE?<br /><br />THANKS

Hey, Kruzer. No. Even back in the 60s we often recommended unleaded fuel (Amoco "White") because of the lower deposits. Your '67 will run as well on 87 octane regular unleaded as anything.<br /><br />Happy boating.<br />JB

Thanks J.B.<br /><br />After I posted this question, I did some research and found the string regarding octane from a few weeks back which was very informative. You mention 87 octane and some of the others say the highest you can get - you think the 87 octane will be the ticket?<br /><br />Thanks again!

Yes, I do, Kruzer. I still hold that the higher the octane rating the higher the likelyhood of harmful deposits from additives. I've never seen a non-racing 2 stroke that needed high octane to avoid preignition or detonation unless the engine was in trouble with deposits already. <br /><br />For what it's worth, some very experienced wrenches disagree with me.<br /><br />Good luck.<br />JB
