Does anyone have any recommendations for sources of lead free fishing tackle? I am not a "tree hugger", but am aware of lead poisoning in our Bald Eagle population...most of which eat fish.

I would also be interested in your review of how well the lead free fishing tackle works for your type of fishing?

Many thanks

have you tried gremlin fishing tackle? they make lead free sinkers. northland fishing tackle might also, also "custom jigs and spins" but I haven't checked them in awhile.

caring about your enviorment is nothing to be ashamed of.

LOL, Around here in NY everybody is whining about not being able to get any tackle that does contain lead.

Use lures instead of live bait. More effective most of the time imho.

Basically it is pre-existing split shot and such that get lead into the carnivorous and fishing birds- not using live bait eliminates most need for small split shot, etc., which is the primary "up food chain" problem. End of story.

In Minnesota, we've been promoting the use of lead-free fishing tackle for more than ten years. We've built up a solid list of manufacturers and their products made from nontoxic materials like tungsten, bismuth, steel, tin, and glass.

In the Internet era, manufacturers are selling direct to anglers and directing them to retailers that stock their products. Look for sponsored teams at events across the country -- non-lead tackle catches fish!

Our site is educational -- www.pca.state.mn.us/leadout -- we just want to sell you on the benefits of lead-free fishing weights and help you find what you need to get out on the water with nontoxic tackle.

I use mostly tungsten while jigging when Im out ice fishing. The tungsten has a superior sink rate while using smaller profile jigs, and using lighter floro helps too. You can get back down to a school of fish youve located in deep water very fast. I have only tried using the ice rigs for open water a few times, but it works very well while finesse jigging vertically. A 45 degree technique has worked this way too.

I have some alum/tin jigheads for open water as well, but Im not that fond of them. They dont sink fast at all and have a much bigger profile. They do have their place and time, so they are another option to have.

Sites like YourBobbersDown and Custom Jigs & Spins have a variety of tungsten products to choose from, but mostly jigs.
