I have a 1990 maxum 2100sc with a ldrive force 125 in it. I'm just wondering whats different about my ldrive and the outboard 125 force models ? aside from the obvious clamp and cover stuff. I'm talking parts wise. i was told that parts were simply unavailable for my ldrive .that cant be true for the whole thing. but are there some parts that you just cant find?

Re: ldrive question?

The powerhead parts are pretty much the same.
The lower unit is pretty much the same.
The section in between is L-drive specific.
Steering hook-up is different.
Tilt system is different.
U-joints and transom plate are specific.

Re: ldrive question?

so then parts for the power head and lower unit should always be available then? and parts for the center section and tilt system would be the hard ones to find?or can you still get all this stuff new?
my train of thought here is this. if there are parts you just cant get for this thing ,in the future when i have l-drive troubles i might want to look at a major swap out as a winter project.so im just trying to get the level on availability of new parts for the l-drive.

Re: ldrive question?

Ok Capt'n, if you have a 125hp, then it is a 1989 model, if it is a 1990 it is a 120hp.

If you can find the model number of the motor, we will know for sure.

Not all parts are available for the motor, some are discontinued.
All available parts for your motor are listed here:
mercruiserparts.com/selectModels3.asp?type_id=FORC

Re: ldrive question?

oh so it is,,, force 120 ldrive , i stand corrected . the parts that are discontinued are they parts that are common to failure or rare to be needed. are all the parts for the lower unit available?

Re: ldrive question?

scratch all that. what im gonna do is run this force till she's done . then yank it and drop in a mercruiser setup. i know of a place out way here,i can get new and used mercruiser parts. then ill be dealing with a 4 stroke.ive done this same thing many times on countless automobiles and they came out just beautifully so im not afraid of the challenges it creates. might even be able to sell some of the force parts and recover some of the cost for the mercstuff. your thoughts? or advise welcome on this idea.

Re: ldrive question?

Most of the lower unit parts are available, just depends on how much you want to spend.

I think converting over to a new poweer plant would make a great project, and end with a fine boat.

Re: ldrive question?

for one of those to work on my boat id have to 86 my swim platform ,i don't want to change the physical appearance of my boat. that's why I'm leaning to the inboard, even though it takes up space in the lounge. all the transom work would be under the platform.

that's a really nice bracket though ,,looks Strong. I was going with the outboard, id be using that thing.

Re: ldrive question?

well i think my lower unit is good for now. seems to take a bit to get into gears but its acceptable. the power head though is a little different, it has spark and good compression but fouled plugs with a thin grey oily snot. i ha vent run this boat much since i got it and I'm thinking it just badly flooded and could still have some fogging stuff in it.ive pulled the plugs and put a towel out to catch the stuff that came out when i cranked it over.i don't wanna crank for too long so I've just left it for the night and crank it here and there threw the day , there's hardly any of that stuff coming out now. I'm starting to think i may have never had this thing running on all four, lol. any one think I'm way off with the flooding idea. i would say the spark is good, and the snot doesnt strike me to be water based. one of the carbs could have a needle and seat problem i suppose .i really think its just full of that fogging stuff. my sled had this same problem when i got it only that snot was darker this stuff is a lite grey but has that same smell.
