I have a 90 mercury and put a SS lazer II prop on it. At about 1200rpms it was making a rumbling noise, but not everytime. I pulled onto a sand bar and checked to make sure everything was tight and noticed that you could push the prop and prop shaft inwards about a 1/4", did not notice this play on the old prop, so is this normal or did I screw something up putting on the lazer prop(48 16990). I put the old prop on and the play is still there put was on the water anymore to check out the rumbling sound. I thought the noise could be from the lazer prop with the side vent holes, anyone notice this before?

Re: lazer prop on 90hp rumbling noise

The play is OK, the shaft is spring loaded. I dunno about the sound, the vent holes could well be it. Make sure you are using the correct thrust washer is all.

I wouldn't worry too much about a noise at 1200, a rumble at 4000 would bear more looking at, a rumble at 5000 would scare me.

-W (a rumble at 6000 means your going too fast!)

Sounds like a bit of gear slack, when was the last time you changed your gear lube.

Regards Keith B..
