I just purchased a boat with a ''06'' 30 horse 4 stroke fuel injected tohatsu. Motor has about 2 hrs on it. I made the mistake of laying it on its "back" during transport (~11hrs). I have not attempted to start for fear of long term or terminal damage. What should I do. I am obviously a new comer. Thanks

Hey,
What you have to do is take the spark-plugs out and see if they have oil on them, if they do, what you do is crank the motor over to blow the oil out of the cylinders could be a little messy but necessary. when all the oil is out clean the plugs and try to start it will be hard start at first, and you might have to clean the plugs a couple of times. but it will start and you will be good to go. oh and there is or you have done no damage to your motor, just some oil got where it shouldnt have. no biggie. john

one more thing make sure the oil level is where it should be before starting, it will or possibly smoke all depending if there is oil in the cylinders if the plugs are not oil soaked then you have no probs to begin with.

Yep, 54 is right. Likely oil has gotten into the cylinders. Remove plugs, crank to expel the oil, (you may want a shop rag at the plug holes to catch the oil), clean off and reinstall the plugs, check oil level, and fire it up. Will smoke a lot as the oil is cleared from the cylinders, and then settle down.

You must remove the plugs to do this, or you risk liquid lock and its associated problems.

Remove plugs, skirt some gasoline in cylinders as to reduce oil thickness to dilute/clean better, pull starter rope several times to spit oily gasoline out, repeat procedure several times until gasoline outs clean, disconnect kill cord or gas fumes can ignite while cranking engine. If unsure if oily gasoline might got inside engine crankcase, drain all oil just in case and put new one to correct level.

Pour acrylic thinner in a small container, soak to thread plugs depth for 1 minute, brush off, let dry, reinstall.

Happy Boating
