late 90s Volvo Penta / OMC questions

I was looking at a 97 Four Winns yesterday and is had a 5.7 engine, and the Volvo penta Cobra Drive. There is a sticker on the valve covers that say OMC but the drive says penta. Is this one of the ones to run away from?

Nope, not a runaway at all. It's all Volvo. You can also convert to a DP drive if you ever wanted to, just by changing the lower unit, not the complete drive.

So what was the year this changed. Check out the picture below. It looks identical but says OMC on it, and is a 1995 model VS the one above is a 97.

94-95 was what I heard as the transition to the OMC/Volvo partnership. Those styles could overlap by a couple of years, so you really just need to know what your looking for vs. just going by the year of manufacture.

Your second pic is a OMC/volvo partnership drive just like the first pic. It looks exactly like mine (95 OMC). The 'hump' on top of the drive is a dead giveaway that it is the 'newer' partnership drive.

Here is a pic of the older OMC Cobra.

Below is a pic of the partnership OMC/Volvo drive.

The newer style drive also has a raw water pump mounted inside the boat and is belt driven. Mine (Ford 5.0 302) is mounted just under the alternator.

Here is a couple of more pictures showing both drives and the differences between them.
As Sparky mentioned, in 94 to 96, both the SX and the OMC dog clutch drive were used by OMC, but not by Volvo, Volvo only used the SX style.
1994 Was the first year for the SX style drive
