Hello, Havent determined the exact year of my engine. Ser. #OB301158. Just got it and when we try to start it it gives an alarm. I know this probably the oil sensor but how do I know or repair? Might want to just premix and avoid any problems? Thank you!!

Its a 1988. Is it a steady or intermittant alarm? Does it continue after the motor is started?

Afraid to start it. I will attempt again in the morning and report the exact sequence and or duration of the alarm. Thanks for your help.

Well, took engine to Mercury Dealer to have alarm and oil injection tested. Of course the alarm did not sound for him. He replaced lower section of oil tube and tested. Said it was working well. Took my boat out for the first time Sat. and it ran well but alarm went off after three hrs of off and on running. Alarm first sounded after we shut down for 5 mins to talk to some friends. Upon start we got the alarm and it was a solid beep for about 7 mins. Pee stream was cool to touch. I am replacing thermostat on thursday to rule that out. Needs to be done anyway.

Re: Late 80s Merc 100 alarm when starting

From what I understand, the mercs around that year model are notorious for sounding a low oil alarm when the oil level is fine. Mine does the same. I have a 1991 50ELPTO. From the research I've done, the sensor inside the oil reservoir is very problematic. When the sensor fails, it sounds a constant, steady alarm.

The previous owner of mine simply disconnected the cables to the sensor. There are two light blue wires coming from the reservoir. There are inline bullet connectors between the reservoir and the control to the alarm. It's disconnected there. As a test, you might try disconnecting these wires to see if this is your problem. If it is, then you should consider changing that sensor. I don't like the fact mine is disconnected. It just is the way it is until I get mine fixed. I certainly don't recommend leaving it this way.

Either way, always eyeball your oil level as a precaution! :)

All that said, if anyone else has evidence to the contrary, please let me know. It's a problem I have too that I also want fixed. Unless I hear otherwise, I'll assume the information I have is correct.

Thanks 007, sounds very similar. I am installing new thermostat Fri. morning and will test if I can get the alarm to sound. At the moment its intermittent.

The engine mounted oil tank on the in-line 4 cyl is often the problem, NOT the sensor switch in the bottom of the tank.

If disconnecting the blue wires from under the oil tank stops the rapid beeping oil alarm then the problem is the magnet glued to the bottom of the oil level float has fallen on or next to the magnetic switch, turning on the alarm.

I have heard on very few successful repairs, re-gluing the magnet back onto the bottom of the float, but don't count on doing it, oil + adhesives usually do not work.

See your local dealer and order a replacement tank.

This is an all too common failure.
