Well i adujsted the linkage in the process i dropped a small plastic plate wich slid under the power head ....thatll slow ya down . So now i learn how to get that lower shroud off. Anyway. What i found when the control box goes into reverse just into reverse the prop ratchets one way and locks the other farther movement of the control lever the prop locks both ways does go into forward and reverse

In forward it should ratchet when the prop is spun clockwise, when spun counter clockwise it should lock. In reverse it should lock in either direction after only a little rotation.

As for your grinding... I hope you are not trying to gently EASE it into gear. It is either in or out of gear.
