When was the last year the old 4 cylinder 2S block was used? I believe it was 1996 and it was rated at 40 hp by then. Any idea the output on the alternator or what type of ignition system it had? Was the ignition system ever used on the 50 hp versions earlier. I have a 50 hp 1984 and was wondering if the later 40hp models had a more modern ignition system that could be put on mine if my fails any time soon. Can you upgrade the alternator if the 40 hp had a larger one? The motor was free so I don't mind spending some money to upgrade it as things fail.

Are these enginse pretty reliable and how are they on fuel?

Thanks for the help.

When was the last year the old 4 cylinder 2S block was used?

1996 and 1997 as a jet

Any idea the output on the alternator

The earlier engines(yours) with the 5454 stator was 9 amps at 5000 rpm and the later with the 9710 stator is 16 amps at 5000 rpm. The 9 amp uses the small 3 post rectifier and the 16 amp uses the rectifier/regulator unit with 5 or 6 wires depending on series.
what type of ignition system it had?

Its the ADI system using the 5772 pack and it was used on all 4 cylinders(40/45/50/75/80/85/100/115/125-hp's) from 1979 till 1996/97

I have a 50 hp 1984 and was wondering if the later 40hp models had a more modern ignition system that could be put on mine if my fails any time soon.
It would be expensive as its the same pack but a different stator ,flywheel, coil mounting plate and cowling/splash pan..

Can you upgrade the alternator if the 40 hp had a larger one?

Yes but will need flywheel, stator, and rect/reg and some mods to mount it.

This is a tried and true design and has been made from 1967 till present, its decent on fuel long as you are not lugging it:D

Re: Last yr 40 hp 4 cylinder 2S + alternator-ignitions?

Thanks for the your info and detailed response. Sounds like I have the latest ignition and 9 amps is not so bad for an alternator. I am going to get a 4S 4hp motor for trolling and backup power and it has a 6 amp alternator between the two I will have plenty of charging power.

Thanks again.
