I have a 72' evinrude 9.9 that maybe gets 2-3 hours a year on it, everything but the impeller and plugs are original. The lower cylinder is slowly filling with water, not hydro-locking, but obviously not firing, if its getting water in there, and not locking up, does that smell like a head gasket to you? It gets a proper winterization every year, and it even comes in the house during winter.:D

Well, I pulled the jug apart since napa had a head gasket in stock, the pistons and walls are pristine, the head had some minor carbon build up, the pistons didn't have alot of play, and I didn't see any cracks. So I moved on to the exhaust gasket, it was carboned up pretty good, and doesn't lay completly flat on a pane of glass...now the fun part.

1. the old head gasket: the metal rings for the piston cutouts are almost non-existent, so i'm thinking I was getting a little blow by on the lower cylinder.

2. Everyone I've talked to said a new exhaust gasket(stamped sheet metal) is extinct.

Can I use some copper high temp RTV on the old gasket, or should I have a new one made. (I live in the machine shop capital of Pa)

YOu can easily get a new head gasket for your motor. Iboats has them, I'm sure. You need to get on crowleymarine.com and look up the parts diagram to get the part # and come back to iboats, plug the # in, and get it here.
No RTV on the head gasket or it won't work. You should also check the flatness of the head a pane of glass and if needed, put a piece of sandpaper on the glass and sand the head in a figure 8 motion.
Good luck,

So much for the "last question" comment hey? Find out your model number and let us know and don't be afraid to ask questions. This is a teaching/learning site and without questions none of us would be learning. I just did the exhaust gaskets in a 79-9.9 and they were normal gasket material not sheet metal. I've never done my 9.5 so not sure what it has but if it is shot and not available I would attempt to use some type of permatex gasket material but I don't know which one to recommend. Best of luck. Rick.
Edit. Ezeke is, IMO, and expert at 9.5's. If you would change your title to include 9.5 I've no doubt he would look at this thread and perhaps have some direction for you.
