Haven't been getting out much, but I catch a few whenever I go.

First trip was with an old friend back in March.

I thought the crappie would be a lot bigger in the south. When we were still doing a lot of crappie fishing we went down to Kentucky lake-area- and caught a bunch of them 12-14" long.

That's right! All we have down here in 'Bama is little ol' dinky Crappie and there's no reason for anybody from up north to come down here and fish for them, but they do... in the spring, in droves!

... and since our Crappie are so small, there's no reason for the people from up north to take any back home with them... but they do, by the hundreds! The only problem with this is that the people from up north that come down here to catch our dinky little Crappie aren't considerate enough to read our fishing regulations and don't know they're breaking the law by taking more than one limit of Crappie (30) back up north with them when they leave. I'm sure that if they would be considerate enough to read our regulations and know this law they wouldn't bother to drive 500 + miles one way to take 30 of our dinky little ol' Alabama Crappie back home with them... this wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit, because I really don't like poachers whether they know they're breaking the law or not.

I'm sorry if so many of my yankee buddies catch so many of your fish and keep them. My wife and I just fish for the fun of it and haven't kept a fish we have caught in the last 35 years. You will find some people who will abuse game laws anywhere and it does decrease the chance of real sportsmen catching bragging sized fish.

I also am a catch and release fisherman, the only time I keep a fish, is if I will be cooking it right after I bring it to the pontoon, to slap it on the grill. I cannot see taking a bunch of fish back home to sit in the freezer.

First off, nice catches... Re limits, the problem exists everywhere so don't feel singled out down there. They wiped out the crappie population on the local lake in about 5 years. They also nearly wiped out the land locked Steelhead because they thought they were trout and were taking 10 at a time. DFG is cracking down in California but it's not as much about protecting the wildlife as it is easy revenue.

On Eagle Lake the limit on ELT's is 2 per day or 4 in posession, if your fishing with two rods out and you have one fish in the live well and just happen to catch two more at the same time, obviously you would release one but if the Alkaline levels in the lake are too high, it's illegal to catch and release and if you get caught the fine is huge. Also if the fish is bleeding from the gills after a hard fight it will die and if you release it you can be fined.

DFG sits on the beach and goes out fishing in their own boats just to watch for the violations. You never know where they are.

from the big 4 in MS. We can't keep anything under 12 they have to be over 12 to keep.

We fished a lake up in Wisconsin one time and I asked some folks if they caught anything. They showed me a bunch of fingerling walleye and pike or pickerel, I couldn't believe that people kept fish that small. I have seen people keep the little molly cats out of the river by the bucket full. I think they only get about four inches long. I am sorry if my remark about the size of those Alabama crappie upset you. I just have never caught any that far south but the ones we caught in Kentucky were the biggest I had ever seen.

Alot has to do with the size limit set by the states. Here in MS on the COE lakes they must be OVER 12 inches to keep. So here we catch alot of 2 and 3lb crappie. Most other states either have no size limit or the size limit is 10inches. It's all in where you live and fish:)
