On my 1975 Merc 650 65hrs 3cyl outboard motor, can I connect my Lanyard Kill Switch where the Mercury Switch used to be? If I was told right the Merc Switch was an emergency kill switch also just only if the motor was trimmed to high to prevent the water intakes from being obove the water line.

I think I'd rather do this than trying to hotwire my mercontrols. I'll just have to buy long pieces of wire to run from my switch to the switch box on my outboard.

Update, This worked out well. The 24ft of 14awg wire and crimp connections all total $8.45 includng tax. So the price was right and I didn't have to open up my mercontrols and cut any wires. Cool!

OK Whoohoo, now you've got me thinking about doing this...wonder if I can wire my 73 Merc 500 the same as your 75 650? Anybody know if my merc has the mercury switch and where its located? Hey Whoohoo, if the answer is yes...can you email me instructions? Oh yeah, did you install one of those after-market lanyard kill switches?

Hi Tim, it's really easy to do even if you don't have a mercury switch, find out which terminal on your switchbox when shorted/grounded out will kill the motor without ruining your switchbox. You will have to ask someone else about that on your motor. I bought an after market killswitch with lanyard kit at Boater's World but I think you can get it at Academy also.

Here in mobile alabama it's the law, we have no choice but to have an emergency killswitch on our boats.

There are three wires that run from the distributor to the power pack on the 1973 Merc 500. Red, white and blue. The kill wire is the blue wire.

Ohh, the only thing not included with the kit is the lengths of 14awg wire you will need to run from the killswitch location to the spot on your motor.
