Re: Lantern

You can use a piece of electric conduit, bend a curve at the top, drill a hole at the end and put an eye bolt thru it. Then use a quick link to attach the eye bolt to the lantern handle.

You may have to crimp the bottom end to fit your oarlock, depending on the size of the oarlock and conduit.

Cost, $4.

Check your local laws. Some states do not allow "Illuminated fishing".

Re: Lantern

Have tried this before. does not work to well. i used the electrical conduit to make it, it was very sturdy but every time you move in the boat, the lantern shakes. i did not trust this, i just hooked up some small lights around the boat. run them off of the battery. ran them all night before and still started the boat in the morning. you can try this, but i would not advise it. if the lantern falls off the hook, it could pose a big fire hazard :( :( . most small boats will move when you move, and yours being a jon boat, i think you will have the same proplem that i had. i tried this with a 16ft bass boat.

Re: Lantern

then drill a hole thru the conduit so you can lock it in to the oarlock, bend the conduit so it forms a big U and hang the lantern over the water!

but officer, I HAD to hang it over the water, otherwise it would pose a fire hazard!!!!

hehehe ... hang the lantern that is!

Re: Lantern

i was thinking that those little flex plastic light hoses might work on the outside rim of the boat. you kno, those 12v hose things you can pickup at the auto parts stores. i wonder if that wouldn't do the trick? you could mount those with sticky type wire ties, and string them along the outside of the boat like xmas lights :D

heck, maybe even put them down low, but not hardly to the bottom ridge, but underwater. this might be a new fad - kinda like the little honda cars with lights under the carriage - we could really see ea other at night that way. just make your boat glow-N-D-dark -no more need for foglights & such ;)

a sheapard's hook in the local landscaping dept.
should do the trick if mounted properly.
just take the lantern down underway...
safe boating,
M.Y.

I'd think a 'shepherd's hook' would be a tad heavier than needed..

It's one of those steel poles, usually panted black bent into a hook at the top for hanging planters or what not..

Re: Lantern

I found a Shepard's hook at Lowe's. How can I attach it to make it tight and stable on my oar lock?

Go to Cabela's (like Bass Pro Shops) saw a lantern holder that mounts to the side of the boat. :D :D I've dealt with them for years, never had a problem, always quick delievery.
you can get marine stuff online or their catalog
(free) :D :D .

Re: Lantern

I use an old metal 5 gallon water bucket. I put my fire wood in it and light it up. I keep it at the front of the boat away from the gas.
