Lake Recommendations for VT or NH

Looking to stay on a small to mid-size lake in NH or VT. I'd prefer something toward the lower part of the states, up to the middle. Decent smallmouth fishing required. I can bring a boat, but for the 3-4 days, it would be nice to have a rental option. The wife will be with me, so it can not be too rustic. Some New Englande type shops and stores nearby would be a plus. Some short hikes and great views +++. The dates are Sept 7 - 10th. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Lake Recommendations for VT or NH

Hello.

Thanks for considering VT ;)

I boat mostly in Lake Bomoseen which is 8 miles long but lately it has become over-run with wakeboarder's :( and crowded with traffic.

Lake Champlain is my favorite fishing spot however...... small mouths are only normally found up north in Champlain and actually not common in any of the lakes near me. Large mouths are a different story..... Champlain, Bomoseen, Lk St. Catherine are great bass lakes.

The nicest Towns to enjoy a NE flavor are really not near lakes......... With that said........ Woodstock VT has great hikes, great town and close to Killington VT (fantastic hikes and views)......... 60 minutes from Woodstock is Bomoseen or even closer to Woodstock is the river that divides NH and VT.

Further North on the east side of the state is Lake Fairlee which is a nice area and worth looking into.

It really depends on where you are coming from....... ;)

Bob,

Thanks for the input. Lake Bomoseen looks interesting. Given the time frames, I would think most of the boarders will be back in school, plus a mid-week dates. It is right after the holiday, though. Any recommendations for places to stay there? As far as the fishing, any bass, walleye, or pike would work. It would only be a few hours here and there, anyway. A boat rental such that the wife and I can explore around the perimeter of the lake, would be great. I do have a good portable gps/sonar w/maps, that should help.

I am trying not to go too far north, because will be headed to Hartford CT on the following weekend. That is also why a boat rental would be less of a hassle, too.

Champlain, is bigger and further north than I would like. We use to visit the Burlington area years ago.

PS: still have to check some of the others, but that lake looked decent, right off the bat.
