First of all, if you are going to drive 1400 miles in 2 days don't plan on doing anything for the first 12 hours after you get there.

We ( JB, John, and Daniel, John's son) left RED SKY behind this year. She is too small for 3 people to cast for muskies. We had guides reserved for the 5 days we would be there. Same guides we have used for 12 years.

Day 1: Cool and overcast after a week of hot weather. Bad sign, but we limited out on walleye before shore lunch. Caught a couple of monster perch in the 12" range and walleye up to 24". After lunch we looked for the muskies but caught only northerns (snakes) to 31" and some nice smallies. Raised one musky about 45".

Day 2: Weather about the same. Results about the same.

Day 3: Clear and still. Hot for Ontario. . .mid 80s. More walleye and snakes. Caught a big smallie, about 4-5lb, on a musky surface buzzbait. Spectacular strike, great fight. How can anything so small be so dang strong?

Day 4: Overcast with light squalls. Had to work hard to find the walleyes for shore lunch. Raised a few muskys. Daniel had one on briefly. More snakes and smallies.

Day 5: Started out drizzly and turned clear and hot. More snakes and smallies. Couple of small muskys. I caught a very unusual tiger musky about 25" that was striped like a normal tiger on her back but spotted like a Leech Lake musky on her sides. Gorgeous fish. John and Daniel both had muskies on in the 45-48" range but lost both rather promptly. JB had a very strong fish on briefly that we didn't see. Don't know what it was.

So, we didn't boat any photo quality muskys. Not a big deal, it has happened before, but we have also had years with great success. Last year John caught 6 over 30", 2 of them over 40".

LOTW is still the greatest fishing hole on the planet in my mind. Not just the fish, but the whole environment. Wild as it was 400 years ago. We see maybe 5-6 boats all day. Dozens of eagles, deer, bear, moose and once in a while a gray wolf.

The greatest value of the trip is quality time with my 41 year old son and his 18 year old son. That is priceless.

If you think you would like to go to the Northwest Angle contact Angle Outpost at Angle Inlet, MN. Dave and Jessica are wonderful hosts. For a great day on the water try Angling Adventures Guide Service at walleyewalleye.com. We have fished with Scott Edman for 12 years and he is without peer for mixed bag fishing.

No doubt about it the bronzeback is a hell of a fighter. The ones in the river are even better.

Glad to hear you guys enjoyed it. Even without the musky you guys caught a lot of fins.

Sounds like a great trip, been to Ontario fishing many, many times. Like you said it's not just the fish, it's where you find them. And those trips are all about the company you keep. I've never fished for muskie, but I love the fight and the meal when it's pike. btw every Canadian I've met also called them snakes, I say bring em on!

sounds like a great trip... snakes is one term... my favorite local term is "hammer handles" for small jacks. (Jack = Northern)

Ask a Canadian how they did, they may say a couple pickeral and a bunch of hammer handles.

Ask an American, they'll say a couple walleye and some small northerns.

The NW Angle is a cool place. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, BF. We call the smaller ones, up to about 20", hammer handles, too. Over that we call 'em snakes. Over 40" we call 'em, "God almighty, look at that monster!!" :)

I've never fished Lake of the Woods, but it's on the list of future destinations. I have fished Ontario 3 or 4 times over the years. The locals there call northerns "Jackfish" and really look at you funny when you tell them you're fishing for them intentionally.

Heck JB when did ya find time to fish with all that writing, lol. I was on the Homestead the first of June. Complete Washout. Rained the whole week but the lakes needed it. Leech Lake was really low. End of docks were only knee deep. Caught plenty of Eyes and of course the snakes were plentiful. Plenty of panfish. Neaumann and I hooked up for some fishn which this is what its all about.

No Gators this time. Its gettn pretty bad when i catch more Muskies in Ohio then up North. For probably the last five years you and I have not hooked up. Maybe next year.

I enjoyed your summary of your trip.

(Muskys,anything else is just bait)

We used to fish Pacwash , just south of Red Lake, and It had Northerns that would snatch the rod out of your hand. The big ones are a ton of fun. Love the walleyes to eat,but not that much fun to catch. Biggest eye was 7lb, caught a 41" pike the last time I was there and the smallies ran from 3-5 lb.
When we first started up there in 79' no one ever caught a smallie. They got better every year after that. We could find them in the same spot every year. We used a blue and chrome "rattlin rap" almost exclusively and caught pike, walleyes, and smallies. (second week of the season). Tried everything and came back to the raps. (3/8) cast at the shore and retrive. Tried 1/2 size and they didn't want it. Must have been the speed of the dive missing the strike zone or ??????????????. Would like to go back but can't take the 15 hour drive. Fish on..............................Jerry

Living in Minnesota and having fished around spruce and oak islands and the tug channel I would agree the scenery and environment in general is outstanding. A little known fact about the northwest angle/angle inlet is that it is actually part of Minnesota and that you have to go into Canada to get there if you travel by road. Just an odd bit of trivia.
