Hello, I've just recently moved from the east side Michigan to the west side, so I decided to attempt to get into salmon fishing in the South Haven, Grand Haven, and Benton Harbor area. The problem is, I've only fished for walley my entire life. I have an 18' Starcraft Holidy, couple downriggers, four rods, and a bunch of spoons. If anybody out there could give me some beginers tips, like when is the earliest time the fish start hitting, and where to start, it would be appriciated. Thanks,

ice

Here is a web site that you can find a lot of info on. WWW.MICHIGAN-SPORTSMAN.COM
Many members of this site fish the same areas you are talking about.
I fish out of St.Joe all summer long and give you some advise on where to fish when fishing in St.Joe.

Wave Dancer

Re: Lake Michigan Salmon

I have been fishing salmon for about 10 years on the great lakes although mostly Ontario, I have always fished in August and early September although I have heard you can fish it anytime. Over the years there are a few things that have never seam to change. Lure speed is in the area of 3.5 Mph, fishing depth always seams to be in the area of 40 to 60 feet over deep water and the lure’s, I have always used are either Northern Kings or hearing strips running behind a dodger. All I do is launch my boat and head out till I spot several boats in the same area, the charter captains always know where the bait fish are hanging out.

P.S. the earlier it is the further you have to go out, its possible to go several miles, a good set of binoculars can help you spot the crowds of boats. To me the boats are the key.

Hope this helps

Todd
