Hi everybody. Planning a trip next month to Lake Mead at the Northeast end. I'll put in at South Cove since Pearce Ferry is closed. I'm going up into Grand Canyon a ways, but I also want to spend some time on the lake. Anyone out there know of some cool spots to check out, camp, hike, etc... at that end of the lake? The more remote the better. :)

Re: Lake Mead.

If your planning on boating very far up the river into the canyon, make sure you have a portable toilet on board. The fine is allegedly fairly steep if they catch you up there unequipped.

Also, keep in mind that the closest fuel dock is the opposite direction (around 13 miles) or you will need to pull the boat out and head back up to Meadview to fill up.

Enjoy! South Cove is my families favorite launch and camping area. If you have not been there before there is a day beach/picnic area near the launch, restrooms and thats it.

Re: Lake Mead.

Mud is fun. Thanks for the reply. Yeah I guide river trips through Grand Canyon so I've done dozens of trips form Lee's Ferry down to South Cove for the take out. I've got all the gear the Park Service requires for the Grand Canyon. I've never spent any time on the lake though, I'm always ready to get off the water after 14 days in the Canyon. Where do you like to go from South Cove? Any cool camping spots? Are there any neat side canyons to check out? Thanks.

Re: Lake Mead.

We normally launch from South Cove, motor around the point and set up a day camp on the sand. From there we'll cruise up through Iceberg Canyon and into the basin where the Colorado enters the lake.

The area is so large that we normally just kinda hang within a few miles of the camp and jet ski, tube and soak up some rays.

I haven't done any hiking up in that area so I do not really have any pointers for you there. Check out this link to the forest service for Lake Mead: www.nps.gov/lame. It may help you out.

Have fun! Heading out to Lake Mojave this weekend.

Re: Lake Mead.

Thanks for the tips Mud Is Fun. The lake is over 100 feet below full pool so getting into the canyon could be a little tricky, but that is the plan for now. We'll definitely check out Iceberg canyon though, and thanks for the link. Have fun on Mojave, should be a great weekend!
