We haven't been on that specific lake, but we boat in Florida a good bit. If it's like most of the lakes down there, plenty of bugs, snakes, alligators, fish, sunshine, like a piece of heaven for us! Good Luck and be careful!:)

I used to roam those waters between Avon Park and Lake Placid. If I remember correctly there is a canal that runs from Lorida to Lake Istokpoga. Some of the best bass fishing I've ever done was on Lake Istokpoga. A visit to Segring (we used to call it See-Boring) if your into antiques and old Florida. Near you is Highlands State Park and makes for some great hiking.

If you decide you want to spend a day on the coast about an hour or so away, give me a shout.

Enjoy!

Re: Lake Istokpoga in Florida

Fished there for Crappie probably close to ten years ago.....caught nada....typical shallow flat bottom lake with very little structure. Was a nice day on the water, just wish we woulda done better fishing. We didn't know the lake at all, we just kinda went out and tried our luck.

edit: Oh...and we got a temp alarm on the big outboard when going out from the ramp. Lots of muck and junk in the water plugged up the intake......used the trolling motor to get out into "deeper" (4') water and then cleared the big motor. Like I said it's shallow...be careful. Deepest spot is like 10'....if it gets windy I'll bet that lake gets really rough in a hurry.

I have been to the lake many times just not in a boat. The wife and I always stop there on the way back from Jupter, its the only lake I have seen that is host to the American Water Lotus. Look fowared to the trip.

I hate it when no fish are bitting, I always have a backup. I take a sandwitch bag of dead shrimp, being the good ole southern boy I am I love catfish and they are alwayse hungry.

Yes it does that is the camp we are staying at. I always thought it was funny the a town would just drop the first letter of the state of Florida to come up with Lorida.

If you're bringing your own boat, you can also do some fishing in the Kissimmee River and even go down to Lake Okeechobee by launching at the new Istokpoga Canal ramp. There's some info here http://www.sunfunguide.com/sunfun/istokpogacanalboatramparea.html . You can't get straight from Lake Istokpoga to the Kissimmee River, due to a weir, but the new ramp is right down the road from Lake Istokpoga.

Thanks eli_lilly; Yes we are trailering from Clearwater and staying at the Mossy Cove Fish Camp for 3 days. I found the Istopoga Canal ramp on google earth, we will absoulty use on of our days to and go on the Kissmmee River using that ramp. Thanks for the tip.
