Huh. My high school science class took a tour of that facility in '56 or '57 - they showed us all of the great things they were working on. No one ever mentioned that they planned to dump their crap in our lake.
Not an unusual occurance for a military facility.
Back at that time, EVERYBODY was dumping chemicals and wastes about the same. There was no EPA, and no guidelines for disposal of anything like that. The cart/tank/barrel was brought or piped out back, and the valve was opened up to spill it's guts on the ground. Chemical spill in the factory? Hose it down the drain. Half the drains led to unlined, open air pits dug outside.
That's why allot of these EPA Super Fund sites are places that existed before the EPA.
