I'm fairly new to the Lake Allatoona area and have heard that they drain down the lake in the winter. When do they usually do that and is the lake usable at all when they do that? Are any boat ramps still open at that time?

Re: Lake Allatoona Georgia

I'm an Allatoona man myself. They do let the lake down pretty low. I'm not sure exactly how low because I've never paid much attention when it's too cold to swim. I did go striper fishing last February and water level was not a problem even at Blockhouse ramp. The dock was on dry ground, but even the shallow part of the lake was navigable. Red Top ramp and dock should be better at low levels. There may be more that are o.k. in witner but these are the only ones I am familiar with. Hope this helps

In the winter it is to low so the ramps are closed. Sometimes in the spring it is to high so the ramps are closed. Yes it gets very low in the winter. Still navicable. drive to all the local ramps to see which are usable. It shouldn't get that much lower thatn it is now.

Ok, thanks; that does help. I use the Bartow Carver ramp all the time. It's a single ramp, very small, but never busy; and kind of tucked away. My boat is about 3 miles from that ramp so I think I will just drive to the ramp first, and if it looks ok, then go get the boat.

I fish on lake Hartwell and we deal with constantly changing lake levels as well. I actually put together a website to help combat the "not knowing" associated with lake levels. Visit http://lakelevelalert.com and check it out. I use alerts to let me know when to move my dock and boat in and out and to know what boat ramps are best to use based on the lake levels. The site is FREE for anyone to use so please take advantage of it.
