I have a L4-3.0 liter i/o The lower unit does not seem to be taking in water. Is there an impeller in lower unit as well as the sea water pump. I was told to just pull 6 bolts off lower unit and impeller was right there easy to change. Does impeller go bad easily ? Any resources for online videos or repair of this unit ? Thanks.

The impeller is NOT in the leg. So don't remove your leg for that. The raw water pump is driven by the belt. I use jabsco impellers for replacements. Way cheaper than the yamaha ones. I've posted the part number somewhere in these forums for the jabsco replacement.
The best thing you could do, is go on eBay, and buy yourself the yamaha sterndrive Clymer manual. Best 30 bucks you'll spend.

Re: L4- 3.0 yamaha

Thank you. I am going to do that.I have the engine manual that came with the boat. I wish i knew more about them. I put the earmuffs on unit and it does not seem to be sucking water. I stopped at this boat guy down the street and he said its an OMC drive and the impeller was under the top cap.I take that off and all I see is the gears. Trying to save money but it might not work out.

I went back and found your post and read it. I think I need the rubber impeller. I am haveing the same problem as stated earlier with water not going through bottom foot. Do you have a pic of where rubber impeller is by any chance ? Oh and its to late, I already took the bottom down because I listened to a supposed boat guy. Now I am finding it a bit hard to put it back. My bad ! I really appreciate your help on this.

Re: L4- 3.0 yamaha

Thanks VERY much for info . It was right there in front and impeller looked new. Now after listening to the so called other boat mechanic, i had taken the lower foot off, i put in back on and it wont shift. The propeler just free wheels. I figured it can only go in if the two shafts line up (splines)
So now I am stumped again.Any ideas ? I ordered a book but it wont be here til next week. Thanks again.

To remove the yammie leg, it is not important to have the drive shifted into fwd. But it is important to make sure that the drive shifter fork is in the neutral position, and the control in the neutral position as well. If you had the drive fork in the neutral position, and the control in the forward position, you will have a problem. Just a guess of course, without actually knowing what you have done.

I'm glad you got the impellar figured out. When the book arrives, you will be set for any/all repairs to the drive!

ricovw, do you buy Jabsco impellers for the 3 liter or the V6 & V8 engines? The Yamaha and Clymer manuals show a different pump for the 3 liter vs. the V6's & V8's but do they use the same impeller? OD, width, shaft bore/spline...everything? I have a 93 Rinker with the 3.0 and am looking for aftermarket parts also.

Re: L4- 3.0 yamaha

Good question. I should have specified that it was for the 3.0. I know nothing about the 4.3 v6, or the v8. If you have the 3.0 litre, then the part number I supplied will work.
