I have my lower unit off to replace the impeller, there is sand everywhere, wuz wandering if it would hurt anything to rinse it out/off with water or will the water get in the oil or what? I havent removed the lower part to the water pump just the upper and the impeller. BTW I have a 1975 650 65horse.
Also the drive shaft has rust below the threads at the top and above the impeller housing, will this hurt anything or is it just dead space and nothing to worry about?

Re: L/U ?

sand is a big enemy of gears. is sand only in pump?
if in oil, another issue.
the rust in that spot won't be a prob.
good luck,
M.Y./

No not in oil, matter of fact when i drain oil before removing l/u, it was bluish with no black and from what i've learned is that is a good thing. Thanks for your reply.

When I put this l/u back on (I HAVE THE MANUAL) do I grease the threads at top of drive shaft or not? The manual is unclear on this point.

Re: L/U ?

couldn't the rust be from condensation that accumulated on the shaft since that part physically touches nothing? Also this motor has set up a while before I was sold to me to rebuild.
