Re: l drive question

According to my info it could be 90 or 120 the 125 appeared in 89.My guess it's a Force design.

Re: l drive question

The 1990 is a 120, with the prestolite ignition.
Merc put the Thunderbolt ignition on it in mid 1991, just before they dropped the l-drives.

Re: l drive question

L-drives are a US Marine (Force) design. US Marine also owned Bayliner at the time. I've never seen one in anything but a Bayliner. Mercury scrapped the project almost immediately after Brunswick purchased Force.

Re: l drive question

L drives are not covered very well in any of the aftermarket manuals.
Try ebay or Mercury for a factory manual.

Re: l drive question

While you could get a nice boat for a relatively small investment if you do your own rebuild; you may want to give it a second thought.Even the Force fans don't think much of the L drive. Also a 120 in a 21 footer sounds pretty weak to me.There is a chance a good decarb might help your compression.

Yeah! Sell the boat for what you can get for it and buy something else. Or, if you are emotionally attached to the boat, remove the L Drive, close up the hole in the transom, buy a jackplate and hang on an outboard--any outboard. 21 foot Maxum you could probably go up to 175 hp.
