Re: L drive impeller replacement questions

I posted this in your other post as well.

As Bondo said...
You have a Bayliner boat
A Force powerhead from a 2 cycle Force outboard
And a Force L-Drive, part of which is also taken from a Force outboard.

Its a bit of an extinct hybred.
Most shops won't work on them.
Very hard to find parts for the drive unit.
No other drive will hook up to the powerhead.
The ignition system is ..... fun.

The muffs will not work for your unit, get a barrel or tank.
Even a big wooden shipping crate will work if you caulk the cracks.

You can get a special waterhose attachment from Mercury for that motor, part number 819069T about $65 at any Mercury dealer.

Sorry to bring you the bad news, but it will be a good learning project/experience.

You need a good manual.
The Clymer Force repair manual is good.
Or look on ebay and see if you can find a factory L-drive manual.

They made 3 models of your motor in 1990, a b and c. You have a "c" model, (the last letter in the model number).

Here is a link for all the diagrams for your "c" model motor.

mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=FOB4540&ivar=images/FORCE/FOB4540/33.png&inbr=1342&bnbr=150&bdesc=GEAR+HOUSING

You should replace the waterpump housing, gaskets, plate, and impeller, parts 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 in the picture above.
You have to get these from a Mercury dealer, or a Mercury dealer online, like mercruiserparts.com
I think all these parts are included in the waterpump kit from Mercury, part number FK1204-1 WATER PUMP KIT

To change the waterpump and impeller, you need to remove the gear housing from the L-drive. Then you slide the old waterpump off of the driveshaft, and replace it with the new one.

It is my understanding that only the 1992 model had an oil injection system. So you will need to mix oil with the gas as you put it in the gas tank.
50:1 50 parts gas, 1 part oil.
2.6 ounces of oil to 1 gallon of gas.

So I believe the tank and pump you referred to is the tilt and trim pump, which is a hydrolic system to raise and lower the drive unit. Raised for trailering, lowered for use, raised SLIGHTLY for optimum performance. Here is a picture of the hydrolic trim pump and reservoir.
