Has to do with a trailer but I think this is the best forum. Unfortunately I need a trailer for a few weeks. Neighbor is from kentucky and has one that I can use. No plates on it and he tells me that KY. does not have plates for boat and utility trailers. OK by me but he does not renew his FL. boat registration for a few years now so I figure I better double check before I pull it on the road. His car plate says LEXINGTON so maby it might be a county thing. Dont need a hassel from the sheriff which would be my luck. Anybody from KY. give me a heads up on this. thanks FRED

Wisconsin is the same way for anything under 3500#. No registration and no plate.

I don't know what KY requires for trailers , but , being hassled by cops for only having a rear plate(TN only requires 1 on the rear ...) , in states that require 2 plates (Illinois , etc ..) ,I would be very leary untill I know the facts .

The trailer must meet the requirements specified by the state of registration on the tow vehicle. If your vehicle is registered in a different state than your friend, then you may have to follow different laws. Your best bet is to call the tag agency or DMV and ask what the registration requirements are.

Here in Oklahoma, plates are not required for trailers.

This doesn't help you in KY, but TN does not require plates on trailers for personal use.

Why don't you call your local DMV and ask?

In KY Utility Trailers (includes boat trailers) are not required to be tagged, if you look at KY's website it says if you are traveling out of state to check the regulations of the state you are traveling to. But I have heard plenty of story's from people being pulled over out of state for not being tagged and with a little explanation to the officer typically they wont site you.

If an out of state officer did cite you in that instance, It would be pretty easy to get overturned in court. Of course it might not be cost effective to fight a ticket out of state.

UNLESS you are going to be hauling that TN trailer outside of the TN state lines.. As per the county clerk

www.dmv.org may help you
Trailers
Trailers are a different story.

In Kentucky, you don't have to register your utility trailer if you only plan to use it within the state. However, since not all states recognize Kentucky's laws, you will need to register your trailer if you plan to take it outside KY.

You can't register anything without a title, so make sure you have one for your utility trailer.

Then, simply head to your local County Clerk's office with the title and apply to register it. Your registration fee will vary depending on the size of your trailer, so you may want to call ahead for details.

And don't worry―the process to register a trailer is similar to that of registering a regular passenger vehicle, so there won't be any surprises. Well, none out of the norm.

Re: KY. trailer plates ?

Thankyou for all the response guys. This will be a pretty short tow so I am not going to be concerned with the plates as long as I know that KY. does not need plates. I would rather have no plate with a good excuse rather than stick a bogus plate on and something happen. This time of year, half the island has out of state plates. Cant wait till they go home and things return to normal. Big thing for me is that all the lights work on the trailer. I think that is the big concern with the deputies. regards FRED

If a bored cop notices that your un-tagged trailer is being towed by a Florida tagged tow vehicle you might get a ticket.
And if you do get pulled over for no plate you might also get a ticket for no brakes on a trailer that state law says you have to have brakes on.
