I have a kohler 5e genset on my Four Winns 278 Vista. I got some debris in the strainer and fried the impeller. It was intact when I pulled the impeller so no vanes were lost. We replaced the impeller and when I restarted the genny hardly any water was coming out and then nothing at all frying another impeller. Starting at the through hull valve I checked everything for blockage. I found a clump of something in the hose from the strainer to the pump. It also looked like it was failing on the inside so I bought enough hose to replace all the hoses from the through hull to the pump. New impeller, checked the gear was still turning the impeller, closed up the pump, primed the pump and filled the hoses. Got no water flow and immediately fried the impeller. At 15 years old I decided to replace the pump and again checked for a block and everything is clear. Started the genny and again no water at all. So the old pump probably wasn't the problem but I am at a loss as to where the problem is. Any one have a suggestion? Thank you in advance!

with the impeller out of the housing and the sea **** valve open, you should have water coming in the boat.

Thanks, I was just thinking I have to ask my mechanic if he took the hose off the pump to see in there is flow from the strainer. We checked and water does come up to the strainer so the problem has to be between the strainer and the pump. Maybe there is a clog in the outlet side of the strainer. The old hose from the strainer to the pump had clogged with a greasy substance and maybe that is also in the strainer outlet. I will check tomorrow as I am hurting from all the work I did yesterday. I appreciate your replying!

basically, gravity will feed the impeller unless there is a clog between the impeller and the seacock valve

Maybe the pump housing is the issue, it's unable to draw suction
With my valve open it will fill the strainer, but will not make it to the pump because its higher

New pump. Probably unnecessary. I believe the problem is in the outlet of the strainer. Will check tomorrow or Sunday.
