knocking noise in outdrive

i have a 2000 bayliner capri, 3.0L merc alpha 1 gen 2,, i started it up in the drive way and it sounds like a knocking noise coming from the outdrive, its not very loud but i can hear it if im standing close to it,, it does it in neutral and in gear,, could it be the exhaust poping or maybe even a u joint,, how can i check the u joints without taking the outdrive off.. jim

If your out drive is not completely in the down position then chances are your hearing strain on the u joints and gimble bearing...... make sure the drive is all the way down before starting whether its in neutral or not.
