Just purchased a 1987 Palm Beach by Nicollet Mfg. Nicollet,MN. It has a 1988 Johnson 28hp SPL on it. Model #J28ESLCCR.
I sure they did not come together orginally. Any way it starts and runs good. But the only The only way we can kill the engine is to pull the gas line and let it run out of gas. There are some cut wires under the consul. The lights do not work. The choke works when you push the key in. But when you take the key out it still runs. Any help would be great. Can't read anything on back of switch as far as letters or numbers go.
But so far her is what I have. RED HOT ALL THE TIME** TURN KEY ON PURPLE HAS POWER **PUSH KEY IN PURPLE W/WHITE STRIPE HAS POWER (CHOKE)** TURN KEY BLACK HAS POWER FOR STARTER This is all on the boat I have not checked the motor yet

Ok guys need more help here. I had to replace the switch and it has different letter they say is replaces the old one. Old one was as follows
A- two purple wires,M -three black wires (grnd),B-Red/purple ,(raised M)Blk/yellow stripe, S-red stripe/yellow, C-Purple/white

So on the new one it is a bit different. B-Battery,Raised M_magneto circuit,C-Choke,S-Solenoid, I-ingnition circuit. M-Ground. The book doesn't really so it that good so I am not sure which wires to put where. HELP!!! Idon't want to short out anything.
Thanks
Kev

Well, sounds like you have a bit of a job fixing the wiring, which is really hard for us to solve for you as we cannot see it, but I'll give it a go. If you go into the remote can you see a black wire with a yellow stripe on it?

welcome to iboats!

in the future, i'd avoid running your engine out of gas...but probably not much choice here but i wouldn't run it until you get the stop circuit figured out.

maybe this will help: engine wiring diagrams

See the black wire with the yellow dashes in the diagram? That is the black with yellow stripe kill wire. If it isn't present where the ignition switch is you will have to go back to the motor and trace forward as far as you can go, making note of any colour changes, then attach it to the "M" terminal on the switch. (The one with a circle around the M) It's possible the ground has been disconnected from the switch?

Thanks for the diagram BlueFin. I was going from memory.

(Ignition Kill Circuit)
(J. Reeves)

A Black wire (ground) should lead from the powerhead to the powerpack. There will also be a Black/Yellow wire leading from the powerpack to a raised "M" terminal of the ignition switch. To complete the circuit, there will be a Black wire from the other "M" terminal of the ignition switch to ground.

When the key is in the OFF position = The two "M" terminals are connected,. effectively shorting/killing the ignition.

When the key in ON position = The two "M" terminals are not connected and the ignition is engaged.

Thanks guys. We got it shutting off with the ignition switch now. I guessing the warning or alarm is not there. We have lights now TOO. There is a toggle switch that is connected to nothing, God only knows that one.
Does this 1988 28SPL Johnson have an alternator or generator? How do I tell? I ordered a book to help.
Thanks for all the help. We are getting there?

Umm, I'm sure a 1988 Johnson doesn't have a alternator. Also is there any more help you need with the wiring situation?

a rectifier (PN 0581778) charges your battery as long as its not burned-out (most often caused by someone hooking-up the battery backwards).

Your service manual should have instructions on how to test it :thumb:
