Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

Howdy fellas, hopefully this is an easy one...

I picked up a "Universal" kill switch with the M and C posts.

As I understand it I am to run from the magneto (black with yellow) at the ignition to the M post on my new kill switch. Then run from the other M post to a ground at my fuse box. Sound right so far?

OK, so if that's right here's my question:

At the ignition am I to just add the new wire via ring terminal from the kill switch right to the M post? Like a jumper?

-OR-

Am I to take the magneto wire right off the ignition switch and butt slice it into the new wire I routed to the kill switch?

Hope that makes sense what I'm asking here:rolleyes:

Thanks guys:)

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

depends on how easy it is to get to the ignition...if its dash mounted then make a jumper from the m wire to the kill switch if its mounted in the remote then it might be easier to connect at the terminal strip under the cowling. you can splice it in but you will need to use the best quality heat shrink type connector as the m wire can run 300v and you dont want that one failing. the kill switch is going to be in parrallel to the key switch you can not remove the m wire from the ignition or the key will no longer shut the engine down. attached a link that shows a wiring diagram

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

An outboard would use the M terminals, Continuity between the 2 M terminals with the lanyard removed.
This would short the ignition to ground to stop the motor.

An IO would use the C terminals, No continuity between the 2 C terminals with the lanyard removed. This would stop power from reaching the ignition coil which would stop the engine.

Ah shhesh guys, ya sorry, this is 84 Evinrude 90 ho. Should have said that at the outset, sorry.

Yah my ignition switch is super easy to reach, mounted right on the dash.

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

That switch PARALLELS the two "M" terminals on the ignition switch. Can't make it any simpler than that. The kill switch functions exactly like the ignition switch. Short the two "M" terminals the engine dies whether the kill switch does it or the ignition switch does it. Whatever you find easiest to do is the way you do it. Do you have a kill switch now???? If you do the wiring is already there. If not add two wires from the two M terminals on the ignition switch and run then to the kill switch.

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

Great info guys, thanks a bunch! I do believe I understand how this system works now but I'm scratching my head at the moment.

Yah, this is a new install. So I did just this...

If not add two wires from the two M terminals on the ignition switch and run then to the kill switch.

One from M on the ignition over to the M on the kill switch. Then one from the other M on the kill over to the other M on the ignition.

Now, I don't have fuel/water hooked up to the engine so I just bumped the ignition key (lanyard pulled) to see if it worked.

Well, the starter engaged. Should it? I was thinking I shouldn't see anything happenen, eh?

Or, does the starter still engage even though the kill switch lanyard is pulled?

Edit: Did a quick search, looks like the starter still engages but the engine won't actually start, eh.:)

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

The kill switch has nothing to do with the starter circuit. It kills spark to the spark plugs.

Cool, I believe I've got it.

I do appreciate the education fellas:)

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

The neutral start switch in the control box prevents starter engagement unless the controls are in neutral. As pointed out, once the engine is running, yanking the lanyard kills the engine so the kill switch has zip to do with the starter.

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

Hey guys, I thought I'd come back and update.

I ran my fist Sea Trail a bout a week ago and attempted to get the engine going on muffs in the drive first. No go. I was heckova confused and ended up sticking on a spark tester. No spark.

So first went to the kill and took off the the two new wires I hooked to the M terminals at the ignition. Well after that she fired right up.

Now I can't figure it. It seems simple enough, M's on the ignition to the M's on the kill, eh? But there has to be something not right:confused:

Re: Kill Switch Install Quick Question...

if you have a meter set it to ohms then test the wires you removed. they should test realy high with the lanyard attached and realy low with the lanyard removed. depending on the meter realy high should be OL or Mohm realy low should be less than 1.
