i have a 72-40hp mercury, im tring to understand the key switch-and kill switch, this is a 2 part question i belive...i understand that on the run position the a-f terminals make the run cyle, while the d-e terminals make the stopp cyle. what mine is doing is it want turn off, got it cranking fine...just want turn off. i understand this could be my key switch. but here is the 2nd part of my question, if my kill switch is working correctly shouldnt it kill the motor when i pull the lanyard to stop it,,,,,neither works, so im really dumb-founded now. i know that the salmon wire and the ground wire make up the off/kill switch cycle, even if the key switch is bad shouldnt the kill switch turn the motor off, for saftey reasons? thanks im just a little lost on this

That is correct for that model...I have seen the pins in harness loose connection so ohm them out. Attach a jumper wire to the salmon on switch box and ground and see if it will start, if it does with jumper attached the switchbox is bad.
