I hate to keep bothering the folks on this forum. This 1997 Johnson 150 does not have a kill switch. The guy that I bought it from said the 'plastic part' was missing when I bought it so I never thought much of it. It looks like some sort of 'Y' shaped part fits around the key switch. This did not affect starting and running the boat with it missing! What do I need to do to replace it? Also, the motor is pushing a 1997 Javelin 389SE 18'9" boat. I have been running it pretty hard up and down the river. It loves gas! I probably went about 18 miles yesterday and used over 10 gallons. Does this sound excessive? Would it help if I put new plugs in it? thanks

The lanyard and pull part is part #176288 about $10-$12 from your OMC/BRP J/E dealer.

The motor will crank without the killswitch its designed to incase you ever lose it or break it.While the motor is running push it in and let go I bet it dies then. You can get a set of the keys at walmart in the boat section.Walmart has a set of killswitch keys that will fit all makes of engines like 5 diff keys I think on one lanyard.

The ignition switch on my '98 Johnson 150 has the clip type lanyard kill switch. It's use is optional, however. If you connect the lanyard, start the motor and pull the lanyard, the keyswitch physically shuts off. If you do not use the lanyard, the keyswitch functions normally.

BTW - I saw the keyswitch lanyard with a selection of clips at Wallyworld, the other day. It was inexpensive

There is no way the engine should run if the kill switch lanyard is not attached to the kill switch. Without the plastic key holding the lanyard out, the engine will crank but not run. With the lanyard key in place, should you be tossed out of the boat the lanyard pulls the plastic key, the plunger retracts and the engine dies. If it doesn't work that way -- fix the system. As an aside -- the "Y" shaped piece may actually still be there but the lanyard has been broken off which will still allow the engine to run. As for fuel consumption -- 150 HP = 15 gallons/hour )give or take a little) at wide open throttle. It depends on the boat and setup. The only way you will know if plugs will help is to look at them. I assure you fuel consumption will not make the engine an economy champ.

agee with last thread 150 = 15 gals per hour.

And now that gas has ethanol all year round that number will increase as these gas products do not run as good.

Chris1956 nailed it. There are some later controls that work that way. If the lanyard is there when you start the motor it'll work as a kill switch. If you remove the lanyard and then start the motror you won't have a kill switch. It'll start and run fine.
