A good friend from church asked me to take his little 8 year old G-son fishing because the G-dad takes him fishing but never catches anything.

So, today, I took them fishing on my favorite lake in a canoe. I don't own a power boat and only fish from one when I can get an invite from my more affluent friends.

It was windy at 10-15MPH with 25MPH gusts. Not the kind of day I would have liked but that's how it goes.

We headed out and on the way to the lake they bought me lunch.

I took 2 rods and my tackle box. I tried a POP-R on my baitcaster for a while but had no luck so I switched to a Mini-lure on my UL spinning rod.

It's a tiny JITTERBUG in the shape of a green mouse with a white rubber tail that sticks up and it has an orange stripe on his tummy.

It was on my wife's LADY LIGHT 6' rod with a trigger UL reel and 6# line. I figured that would be a good rod for the 8 year old if I actually got a strike.

BANG!

Two nice bass in just a short time. One was a nice sized female. I let the kid land them and he was thrilled. He was NOT thrilled when I let "his" fish go.

We had been out for an hour or more and the wind was picking up, so we headed in.

When we got to the landing, he lamented that he had "wanted to take those fish home to eat" and I said "I put them back because I want to try to catch them again." He said, "Well, you better hurry up because you're so old."

His G-dad and I got a big laugh out of that and the kid didn't know what was so funny. That just made it funnier.

"Out of the mouths of babes."

Do you have any funny stories about kids and fishing?
