I built a custom boat last year and bought some used motors. Well the used 7.5 merc is just to fast for the style of fishing I do so am going to purchase a new 6 hp. I have the opportunity to buy a 2001 new johnson 6 hp (with warranty) or a 2003 yamaha for another 600 bucks. Do you take the deal or is it really a deal? These are both 2 stoke motors.

Both should be good motors. I would heavily consider what I thought of the dealer in making the decision. Some dealers will stand behind the warranty "above & beylond - -." Others will give you a hastle on the warranty or will take forever to do anything.

I don't know Marty, the Yamaha would loose a couple hundred a year for the first couple of years anyway. I would probably go for the johnson. Sounds like the dealer ate some of the depriciation. The problem is, I wonder if ether one of these motors will be slow enough. The 7.5,6,5 HP motors are pretty much neck and neck if you ask me. Have you concidered going elect?

Re: Kicker question

It would be more effective to slow the boat down by using a smaller pitch prop. If you are at a 9 pitch now, then try a 7 pitch. That would slow you by about 23%.

A local dealer probably has a few you could try until you decide which one to buy.

Simles4U
Hard for me to belive it will not slow down. Must be on a tiny boat fast boat. Have you tried running motor a little rich and slowing down the idle. Cheaper to try a flater prop even if you have to limit full throttle. Are you back trolling??

My 15 will run so slow that flat fish will not wobble and spinner will not spin but is on a 21 foot aluminum boat.

Re: Kicker question

I am use to fishing a 4.5 out of a 14 ft boat and the new 17 ft custom is heavier, wide. The 7.5 doesn't go in reverse so I would like to upgrade from the 70s motor. I did look at a new prop but decided I would like the new kicker.
I would use the 4.5 but need a long shaft... Just want get some solid reliablity from the kicker. I have also added a 5 hp 4 stroke Evinrude in the mix.. $875. Used but very little..
Thanks for the ideas and hopefully I will have a new one before the weekend is over.

Marty
I did not know the 7.5 was so old as to not have a reverse. Go with the 4 stroke, so quite, fuel efficent, no smoke, and no fuel mixing.

Re: Kicker question

Well the 7.5 suppose to have reverse but I am stumped to fix it. Or would try.. has a shifter for it but only turns at home in yard. Not when in the water
