I have a 2006 North river Scout that is 20'. I'm wanting to buy a used kicker motor and i'm not sure if i should get a 20" shaft or 25" shaft? Does anybody know if both sizes will work. I do not want to buy a bracket i just want to use the exsisting motor bracket that comes on the kicker motor. Currently have a yamaha 150f outboard with a jet mounted directly to the transom. going to install the kicker motor on the transom next to the main motor.

I want to get a 8 hp or 9.9 hp. I just want to use the bracket that comes on the kicker motor.

You didnt say what the shaft length of the main motor is!

Measure the transom at the location that you want to mount the motor, then buy the kicker length that is closest. You just need to have the prop below the bottom of the boat.

If the main is a 25", you probably want a 20" kicker. If the hull is a deep V, it should be several inches less where you mount the kicker.

The main motor is a 25 inch shaft. The spot I measured for the kicker motor is 22.5 inches. It is right in between.

I like the longest shaft possible.

1. the deeper in the water the more push it has.
2. drag is not a factor.
3. waves rolling under you or "No brakes" if you have weight forward is the main problem.
4. ever try to dock with the kicker and your 300 lb deck hand goes forward? Or 2 of them.

Re: Kicker motor shaft size?

There is only one situation where the above post may not be exactly correct, and that's if the type of fishing you plan to do is side drifting. If you side drift then you want the motor mounted as high as possible so you can travel through shallower water. The center line of my prop is about 1" below the hull, this works OK for trolling, but reduces the thrust in reverse.

5- Will add cavitation problems with shorter shaft when boat has more weight at bow or cruising at choppy seas.

Plainly in agreement, as you can't have all 5 previous benefits mentioned working as both have stated, definitely 4 benefits out of 1 wins by far!! Kickers are used mostly for emergencies, very few for fishing.

Happy Boating
