I have a topic going already in please help me choose a kicker, but this is off of that a little so I was hoping for some input on this. Its an OMC motor bracket, max HP 15 it says on it. It was purchased and installed with the boat in the late 80's. I was looking at weights of most current 2 stroke 15 HP motors and they are all under 80 pounds what I have seen. Do you think that is pretty much the weight limit? I looked behind it to see how it is mounted, and at that point on the transom is just the outer fiberglass and another thin layer maybe 1/8" of fiberglass all the way across the transom and around the sides of the boat at that level. Then where the bolts go through, they put a couple of strips of 1/4" plywood across there. Maybe I am just paranoid, but is that thin layer of fiberglass enough to hold that much weight? I guess it just makes me nervous watching the transom move in and out when I put weight on that bracket and bounce it up and down. Should I add more backing plates on the inside? And is it best to take the motor off when trailering it? My ski tow cleat is in just the thin outer fiberglass, but then there are rods on the ends of the bolts that mount inside the engine compartment. Should I do something like that to it? Thanks guys.

If you think that you may have a problem trailering
that kicker . Then you will magnify the problem
running on the water with it. If it looks like
it's not supported properly you are probably right
You had best find a way to reinforce it, and that
will give you one less thing to have to worry about.

I dont know, maybe the fiberglass is stronger than I think. It was installed by the dealer so it should have been done right. You think a metal backing plate over the whole thing would beef it up a bit?

dan

They have aluminum backing plates made for that purpose. I think right here on I-boats...

I would defrinitely go with the aluminum backing plates to spread the load over the fiberglass. A thin coat of 3M 5200 under the plates would be a plus.
