Re: KEYPORT NJ, VACINITY,
Um, have fun!

What do you want to know? Only part to steer clear of is cliffwood beach up to morgan beach at low tide, there's some pilings and sandbars, trust me.
Stay out about 200-300 feet at cliffwood, maybe 500-700 feet at morgan and you'll be fine.

Main advice, listen to the weather and if they're calling for stiff east or northeast winds be careful, that means the waves will be rolling in off the ocean and it gets nasty quick sometimes. Any other direction and the waves need to build up off a shoreline, and the water does not get nearly as rough. Even out of the E or NE, if it's under 10-15 or so it'll probably be fine.

The keyport municipal ramp is great, concrete and well built so the trailer will always be at the same load angle regardless of tide. Only problem is that there's no protection at all, so if the bay is choppy so is the ramp. There are a couple marinas up the creek there, Wagners, Keyport Marine, etc. I have a season pass for Keyport Marine Basin. Always a sheet of glass there and the ramp is a few hundred feet off the creek so there's really no tidal current to pull you around. High tide sucks sometimes though, as the ramp taper off to level and the trailer won't drop off much, really gotta back it in far so you'll be getting wet feet. Anything other than full high tide is great though. $15 a day or $200 a year for that ramp. Municipal is $15 a day too, $75 a year for residents of Keyport. I passed on that because of seeing how it gets trying to launch/retrieve in a 2-3 foot chop. Not fun.

If you'd like, I'm always out on the bay after work and weekends, email me at
huminski@optonline.net if you want to hook up sometime to have a shadow out there the first time.
