As some of you know, my dog Keeper spent a night in the pound. Castawayray was right, check him over good.

Well he didn't have any fleas or ticks, but now he has a bad cough. During the last year as a pup, he was given 3 shots to prevent kennel cough, total of about 120 bucks!

So my opinion on this is not to let your pup get the shots. After every shot, he would cough for about 3 weeks. He would get over it until the next shot and then the same ole thing over again.

With his impoundment, apparently he contracted Kennel cough. So what good was the vacine? His vet is calling about every 3 months to get him in for this and that. I am not bowing to what they think is best for him. My past dogs never went to the vet. One which was a pug is on its 18th year! Don't think she is going to make it much longer. She had lived one good doggie life. Spoiled rotten. :D

This is just a circumstance that may or not pertain to the future of your dog/s.

I'm going to look for a new vet that is not a money hungry beast! Duh, what am I saying, I think they all are!.....SS

SS, I Don't know anything about Kennel cough, I but with all the pets, I have had, I sure have seen my share of vets. There are definitely good and bad vets out there. I usually shop around and try to fid the ones that care about my pets, are forthright and have a small animal specialty. There are definitely good vets and bad. My vet tells me if there is a treatment that will work or not. They also give me a 5% discount because of the amount of business I do. Keep looking for the good vet that will be honest with you.

Yes SS, while I have raised German Shepards, Rotts, and Jack Russells, I give all my own shots.

I get mine from www.drsfostersmith.com
I have learnt the hard way, to do my own.
I even cut their own tails.

As some of you may know, I just recently got a new puppy. He's now 11 weeks and was allowed to leave the animal shelter with a kennel cough as long as I gave him his antibiotic twice daily. He did have quite a nasty cough with a runny nose. Twice a day, I'd wrap his little pill in cheese and he'd gulp it down. Within 3 days his cough subsided, and within a week his runny nose stopped. This was some pretty potent stuff, I guess. If anyone needs to know the name, I can look it up. I only wish I had 1/2 his energy!

Hi SS, could be your current vet got hold of a bad batch of the vaccine. I would go and have a talk with him, kennelcough is contagious and your other pets needs to be protected against it.Maybe he can re-administer new treatment at no charge or at the least give you a discount if he values your patronage,if not, find you another vet.

The vets are suppose to have good stuff, but it can lose it's potency after so long of shelf life or if it was not refrigerated enough.

I always get mine shipped in dry ice and right from the package to the fridge.

And like was mentioned, that is nothing to fool around with.

The dogs/pups can die from it if not treated correctly.

around here kennel cough vaccine is required if you put your dog in the kennel. dems the rules.

we love our vet, and they have day and nightly boarding too which is nice because if we are gone on a trip and something bad happens to our dog, all of the resources needed are right there.

between heart worm, flea/tick treatment, various vaccines, and kennel stays, we average about 120 per month if you spread total cost per year over 12 months.

I even cut their own tails.

i've never met anyone who has been able to explain this practice; care to share? no judgement, i just really dont get it

We thought of boarding our dogs a few years ago and were told that they wouldn't board dogs under 9 months old because of kennel cough.

"between heart worm, flea/tick treatment, various vaccines, and kennel stays, we average about 120 per month if you spread total cost per year over 12 months."

You could use doggie insurance! Really! Check into the AKC website, they have several different plans. My three dogs are covered for about $600 a year, They have better health insurance than I do! Well worth it if you get one to cover meds also.
