For about a year now I have keeping a fishing diary.

When I launch I write down water Clarity,Sky condition, and water temps..While fishing I will note what type of lure I am usen, size, depth and color..

If I catch a gator,I note time of day, depth, and how i was using lure..After a while you will see a pattern when you go back and read the conditions and what was working and what was not..

Does that mean you are catching more gators or not? Sounds like the fishing might be a little slow if you have that much time to do all that writing... :D

Re: Keeping A Diary

great point GF! I started doing it specifically on L.Michigan @ 8yrs ago or so and it soon spread to all my fishing time getting logged.

It started out being a regular school note book but, after a few wet trips my ex bought me a fancy leather 'fishing log' from Orvis. I keep a pocket note pad handy to write notes in when in the boat and transfer them when I have a minute into the 'log book'. (note: don't use felt tip pen in the boat)

RN.. good way to see patterns and fun to go through and remember specific trips and times shared with folks.. in just that short time seeing patterns and how they might even change slightly on a body of water is pretty interesting and helpful.

great topic GF

Certain colors are better on sunny days and Vice versus on cloudy days..In the spring I will use smaller baits acording to the size of the bait fish..

Late summer and early fall is when the heavy lumber comes into play..I keep a log to see what was doing what on certain conditions..This also takes the guess work out of what your going to use..To many lures on this end..I have to narrow down what I am going to use that day unless I want to rent a uhaul..lol..

Re: Keeping A Diary

I've been keeping a log for about two years now. Funny thing is I've never gone back and read past entries.

Re: Keeping A Diary

You should add moon phase and barometer readings. barometer readings if you check you catch more fish on a steady and dropping barometer thana rising one. Moon phases all living things become more active in the 3 days before and 3 days following the full moon and the new moon (which is when there is no moon at all). If you watch these times you can tell you wake up in the morning to the sound of birds churping dogs barking and all things moving more this is the time to increse your chances fishing. Doug Hannan has some great books on moon phases and he has caught and recorded over 550 10# plus Bass and always keeps records. Hope this helps a little. Fish81156 Pat

Re: Keeping A Diary

i have kept a log for about the last 7 yrs, logging such things as what part of the lake i was fishing, what lures ,speed, barometric pressure, was i long lining or useing the down riggers.Your right after going back thru them (a good thing to do on a cold winter nite) a pattern starts to develop,as to what fish are caught and what lures worked the best.

I have found this to be very helpful during them times when it seems like nothing with hit your lure, always helpful to look back and see what works and what dont.
