I don't know about increasing performance, but take a look at a boat With keelgaurd. When the boat is up on plane the portion covered with keelgaurd is rarely in the water.

Re: Keel Guards

Maybe they figure the slots have some magic? Air bubbles or something. I've never got up in the bow to see how much of mine is still in the water when on plane, but it sure protects the hull at the beach or on the ramp.

Don't know about the claim, but...I do know that some cars have less drag when a bra is added to front of the hood - how? makes the air "slipping" over the car more turbulent - this in turn causes the air to "stick" to the car more than if it were laminar. Ask yourself, why does a golf ball have dimples? Maybe the keel guard provides the same for the boat?

Re: Keel Guards

If you use the keelgaurd in a way that it covers a bunch of damage (gouges deep scars and chips) then I would think performance would be improved, but to just put it on nice smooth shiny keel performance gains I doubt, other than in the area of beeching it with no worries of keel damage.

Guy's,

The keel guard is there for one thing and one thing only.
To protect it from beaching.
PERIOD.

It has nothing to do with performance.
When your on plane, it's out of the water.

Then why is it advertised "Actually Improves Performance"?

Re: Keel Guards

From the Keel-Guard website:

Q. Will the KeelGuard create drag and reduce the speed of my boat or PWC?
A. No, the KeelGuard is designed with hydrodynamics in mind. KeelGuard's patented drag reduction design will not slow a boat or diminish its performance. In fact, on smaller boats and PWC's it is not uncommon to experience an increase of 1-2 miles per hour on top end speed.

With one of these things on front and a whale-tail on the back, I should be able to about double the speed of my boat!!!
