Friend gave me this motor yesterday. got it on trade and was just going to throw it away. The lower unit is chipped off in a few spots but it is complete..are parts interchangeable with other yrs. is it worth having someone fix the lower unit or try to find a replacement. thx

JW 10 was the first model year.----This motor was essentially the same for 20 years or more.--Finding parts is not hard.----Look on ----aomci-----and post a wanted ad.

If it's essentially healthy - good compression, nothing vital broken, etc., it can live again. Skeg and AV plate on lower unit can be welded, or you can find a replacement housing/lower unit via any number of venues. Or, use it as is, as long as the broken bits don't let water in, and don't affect cooling water circulation. The old 3s were one of the best motors ever to come out of Evinrude and Johnson showrooms. Smooth runners, quiet, easy to work on. I've got several!
